Once a legendary Georgian estate, Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury has hosted a century of celebrations. Step inside a place where timeless grandeur meets unforgettable moments.
In 1908, Dr. Ernest Fahnestock purchased the 115-acre Stillwell farm in Shrewsbury and named it Shadow Brook Farm. He commissioned architects Lewis Colt Albro & Harrie T. Lindeberg to design a stately Georgian mansion, completed in the summer of 1910 — transforming a working crop farm into a gentleman's country estate.
The 25-room residence rose as a five-bay, hipped-roof Colonial Revival, set back nearly 1,000 feet from the road and approached over a winding blue stone driveway lined with towering maple trees. At the rear stood a fountain, a 100-foot rose garden with over 100 varieties, and a formal English cutting garden.
Major renovations that began in 1982 honored the estate's early-1900s spirit with authentic materials. Restored antique doors standing 11.5 feet tall open onto the foyer, crowned by a honeycombed wood ceiling brought back from an English castle.
Wooden ceiling panels salvaged from New York's Villard Houses grace the galleries. The Regency Room shimmers beneath art deco chandeliers and wall sconces from the Paramount Theater, while a golden 32-light chandelier — rescued from the main ballroom of New York's Biltmore Hotel — anchors the grand staircase.
Dr. Ernest Fahnestock's Georgian mansion is completed at a cost of more than $200,000 — a lavish country retreat surrounded by formal gardens, piazzas, and rolling farmland.
Frederick Thorngreen transforms the residence into a modern restaurant, hotel, and night club — opening its doors to dining, guest suites, and a new private entrance.
New owners earn a stellar reputation for elegant atmosphere and gourmet cuisine. The Oak Room expands with sweeping garden views, and a Bride's Room is designed for wedding parties.
Under the Zweben family, Shadowbrook welcomes notables including Frank Sinatra, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Henry Mancini, Robert Kennedy, and Vice-President Walter Mondale.
Now among New Jersey's most storied estates, Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury continues its legacy — a breathtaking backdrop for the most cherished celebrations.
The heart of the estate, with beamed ceilings, paneled walls, and a wide expanse of windows overlooking the gardens, pergola, and miniature lake.
Added in 1969 and adorned with art deco chandeliers from the Paramount Theater, this grand room lets Shadowbrook host two celebrations at once.
Formal gardens, a fountain, and lush grounds set the scene for romantic outdoor ceremonies and cocktail hours beneath the open sky.
